Where can i get a MP4 Codec and how do i install it in Windows Movie Maker ?

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit , and the latest version of Windows Movie Maker  , i want to edit my GoPro videos from my Hero 3+ , which is in MP4 format  , Movie Maker says its not supported when i try to import the video , it says to get codecs , but it
does not show where or how to get the codecs or how to install them , but i have seen posts all over these forums that say that it should play MP4’s

It says it supports MP4’s right in this Microsoft link
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq   , but mine says it does NOT have the codec for MP4’s , so i am confused , and it does not auto download one like everything says it should , and no one seems to ever post a link
on where to get the codec and how to install it

This is the error i get when trying to import a MP4

The file C:\Users\Jims\Documents\Motorcycle Racing & Riding Pics\Helmet Cam Videos\9-6-2014 Clay Peak\GOPR0001.MP4 cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download
and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

My Questions are :

Were can i get the MP4 Codec i need to edit my GoPro 1080 HD videos in Windows Movie Maker version 6.0.6002.18005 ??  (i do not like GoPro’s Movie Maker  , its kind of a pain to use) , or why won’t my Windows Movie Maker accept MP4 videos to edit if everything
says it should ??

How do i get the codecs installed

I need direct links to the codec needed , please , or exact info on how to actually fix Movie Maker so it accepts MP4’s , and info on how to actually get the codec’s installed if i need them

Thank you  …Jim

Hi Jim,

We understand how inconvenient this issue has brought you. Let me help you with your issue that Movie Maker is unable to edit MP4 files. It is possible that an outdated codecs or video driver is causing the issue. For us to isolate and for initial troubleshooting
kindly follow the instruction below:

Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.
Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

  • Try running the Microsoft FixIt tool for codecs .
  • MediaInfo      will be able to identify any issues with missing or faulty codecs and      whether it’s already installed in your computer or not. You can get it
    here

Note: If can’t find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Windows Live Movie Maker project.

-Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date.
Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

    1. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press
Enter key on the keyboard.
    2. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.
    3. If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

Example:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

Also you may refer to this

Thank you.

Does the go-pro come with a disc and software to install?

If so, this will include the codec.

A quick internet search has shown a lot of people have had success by installing the latest version of quicktime.

Unfortunately not all codecs will work with all versions of software and you may find that the gopro mp4 file will not work with your version of MM and you need to convert the file to say a wmv before editing.

No the GoPro does not come with any “Software” , and i have the latest version of Quicktime  , the issue seems to be in WMM itself , actually the PC was just recently put together and everything is fresh and updated to the latest drivers/versions

It found nothing wrong , and from what i see it says it has MP4 Codec’s , or am i reading it wrong ??

Also , the reason i want the Movie Maker to support MP4 is because i don’t want to use a Video Converter  as it will just degrade the quality of the video , then i might as well go back to my old NON HD GoPro  , thats the whole point of using HD  for Quality
Video’s   , i just dont understand why MP4’s have been around for years yet Microsoft can’t make their products updated like everyone else does   , honestly i would rather go back to XP  , it had NONE of these issues  , yet it got discontinued because it was
Better and more reliable   , why can’t Microsoft just make a Updated Codec list for WMM 6.0 ??  , it would solve the issue or the need for a converter , which to me is not a SOLUTION to the problem

Hello Jim,

Thank you for the information that you’ve provided. You’ve mentioned that you’re using version 6.0 of Movie Maker. We would like to inform you that this is a lower version of Movie Maker. This can be the reason as to why your .MP4 files are not being recognized
by the program. We suggest that you use the latest version of Movie Maker to rectify the issue. Depending on the operating system that you’re using, please download the version that is compatible in your computer:

Windows Essentials 2012  – Movie Maker 2012
(for Windows 7 and Windows 8)

Windows Essentials 2011  – Movie Maker 2011
(for Windows Vista and Windows 7)

Note: Please read the system requirements before installing
Windows Essentials 2012.

If this did not solve your issue, please give us an update for us to further investigate your concern.

Thank you.

Is there anyway to get the Windows Movie Maker 2011 as a Stand Alone download  ?? , i have Vista Ultimate 64 bit  , which i mentioned in my first post , the main issue with your suggestion is , i have Windows Live Mail version 2009 , which i do NOT want
to loose or change in any way , i dont like the newer versions of Live Mail and i do not do any Windoes Live Essential Updates because of this , and actually un-installed the newer versions when i found out that it changed the way Pictures are attached , so
i could install Windows Live Mail 2009 again and i dont want to have to go thru re-installing it AGAIN , just to get the Movie Maker that recognizes MP4’s , and with this 2011 download , it does not allow you to un-check Live Mail so it wants to update it
, so this is a big issue for me  , i need the Movie Maker without updating Windows Live Mail   , i already tried to install Windows Essentials 2011 , and when i got to the part where you un-check the items you don’t want , there was NO option to un-check Upgrading
Live Mail so i cancelled the Install  , and why i am here trying to get JUST the Movie Maker OR a MP4 Codec so i can Edit MP4’s with 6.0 if possible

Hi JimDirt,

Thank you for getting back to us. With regards to your concern that you do not want to update Window Live Mail once you update Movie Maker. Please be informed that there is no way to update Movie Maker only as Movie Maker and Live Mail are both part of Windows
Essentials.

Also about your issue that MP4 is unable to play on Movie Maker. For us to isolate your issue, kindly try to play the file on Windows Media Player. If it plays there it is possible that the old Movie Maker is causing the issue as it is not detecting the
codec that is installed on your computer.

Hope this helps. Let us know how things turn out.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Like i mentioned in my first post  , i can’t “play” a MP4 in Movie Maker  , i can NOT even import it  , when i try to import it  , i get the error , as i posted in my original post

This is the error i get when trying to import a MP4

The file C:\Users\Jims\Documents\Motorcycle Racing & Riding Pics\Helmet Cam Videos\9-6-2014 Clay Peak\GOPR0001.MP4 cannot be imported because
the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

What the error is saying , is that i do not have the codec needed  , installed on my PC  , so to me it would be easier to get the codec needed and install it  , simple right ?? , but so far , no one can tell me where to get it (i would think Microsoft would
have it readily available because MP4’s have been around for some time and i would think they would make it available/compatible for ALL versions of Movie Maker , but then that would make sense) , and no one can tell me how to install it in Movie Maker 6.0

The above error is not saying the codec is not compatible with Movie Maker 6.0 , the error is saying its missing/not installed and wants to know if i have already tried to download it and install it , so to me , that means there MUST BE A MP4 CODEC TO INSTALL
into Movie Maker 6.0 , available from Microsoft , if so , how do i get it ?? , and how do i install it ?? , why does it not “auto-download” like it should ??

What i am trying to achieve is to , as simply as possible , is to get the codec needed or a Movie Maker needed that recognizes MP4’s without having to redo my PC and all the programs I WANT TO KEEP , just to have a codec that should have been there in the
first place   , can’t you guys tell Microsoft to just make a MP4 codec that works in ALL versions of Movie Maker , and make it available to its customers that NEED/WANT IT ???   , after searching thru post after post , it is apparent that there are a lot of
customers with the same issue , that are all seeking a resolution in way of a codec for 6.0 that allows the use of MP4’s , so why can Microsoft just make it available in a Update

OR , can you tell/ask them to take the Windows Live Essentials 2011 and add a check box for Windows Live Mail so WE have the option NOT TO UPDATE Live Mail …. , then re-release it ??  , OR make a Stand Alone Version of Movie Maker with ALL the features
and ALL Codec’s for popular formats , such as MP4’s , that would solve everything , and give me a better/newer version of Movie Maker , and be compatible with MP4’s

Vivien asked if you could play it in Media Player not Movie Maker.

The latest version of quicktime should supply the necessary codec for the file.

Unfortunately error messages are not always totally correct in what they say, if nobody designs tit to say not compatible, it will throw up the closest error based on not being able to play it, so you can’t take the error message as gospel.

MP4’s have indeed been around for a good number of years, there are also a good variety of different ones.

Codecs are used by the originator of the file, so GoPro use a codec to make the file.
You need to ascertain the codec type used by GoPro and then search the internet for this codec, purchase it if necessary and install it onto your pc.

Movie Maker will then pick up the codec and sue it to decompress your file.

As I have said, quicktime could supply the codec, and also that the earlier version of MM may not be compatible with the file and codec you want to use.

The question was asked if you can play the file in WMP, as this would show that the codec is installed, if it does play, unfortunately it means MM cannot pull in the codec to work with your file.

We have a stalemate, you can’t update movie maker because of other software, so I see the only other option is to purchase some other video editing software. All the new ones work quite well with most Mp4’s now, but all the good ones will allow you a 30
day trial period to see if you like them or not.  Look at Corel Videostudio X7 or adobe premiere elements.

A good internet search may well show up other free software for you to choose from.
